124MAWLID-E SHARIF
Mawlid ceremonies begin with the following ayat: “Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who believe! Call for (Divine) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation.” (Ahzab, 56)
Then the salawat-e sharifa follows: “Allahumma salli wa sallim wa barik ala sayyidina Muhammadin wa ala alihi adadaka malillahi waka ma yali qubika malihi.”
When it comes to the word “sayyidina”, the following words are changed in turns:
1- Sayyidina
2- Ashabina
3- Khairul wara
4- Bahr-al ‘ata
5- Shams ad-Duha
6- Badr ad-Duja
7- Habibina
8- Tabebena
9- Rasuluna
10- Nur-al Huda
A supposedly great preacher in Germany was giving a sermon, saying “The mawlid is like singing a song.” In opposition to him, we say: Songs are sung to an ordinary person to appreciate their beauty. It portrays their physical characteristics that the nafs likes, and which Allah does not like. Songs are generally composed of words uttered by lovers to each other or to a compositional beauty.
How can one compare the mawlid in which our Prophet is praised to a song? How can a preacher say something like that? Allah Almighty praises our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, many times, again and again in the Qur’an, more than we praise by reciting the mawlid.
“(O my beloved!) And We have not sent you but as a mercy to the worlds.” (Anbiya, 107)
“He is the Messenger of Allah and the Last of the prophets.” (Ahzab, 40)
Allah praises Muhammad and those with him, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali, including their characteristics. (Fath, 29) In addition, He orders us many times to obey him and to follow him. We even list the ayats that praise him; they form a type of mawlid book. Moreover, Allah Almighty utters more praises in a Hadith Qudsis.
He said: “If you were not to exist, I would not have created the heavens and the earth including all creatures. I created all of them for you.” (Mir’at-e Kainat, Vol. 1, p. 414; Irshad, Vol. 1, p. 127) Our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, is the light.
If Allah Almighty praises him in the Qur’an, in the Torat, in the Zabur and in the Injeel more than we praise in the mawlid, then we should praise him at all times of our lives. The Qur’an consists of ayats. It has 114 surahs. It contains praise that is better than the praises in the mawlid, which means that Allah Almighty assigns many surahs and ayats to praise our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. We have to invoke salawat upon him when his name is uttered once. While Allah praises him in surahs and ayats, how can we perceive this as something that is bid’ah? I tell this preacher:
- If you believe in the Qur’an, why do not you declare the ayats that praise our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam? If you claim that you declare them, then you are a liar. While Allah praises, you prevent people from doing so. Even Allah praises other prophets a few times, these are not as much as the praises expressed to our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.
The verses of Isra, Lail, Najm, Shams, Dhuha, and Kauther all contain praise that Allah Almighty directs to our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. The light of our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi was sallam, descends from Adam, alaihissalam, through other prophets to himself. (Anwar-al Ashikin, p. 240; Siyar Nabi, Vol. 1, p. 180) It does not go to anybody else. Moreover, he was born with a light. Never call him, like the non-Muslims call Musa and Isa, alaihimissalam, God, or son of God! Other than that, you can call him whatever you want and it will never be enough sufficient. It is a must for us to praise him since Allah praised him so much. When Allah states “Perform salat”, salat is compulsory to us. When Allah Almighty praises him this much, why is not praising him for us compulsory?
Hadith Qudsi: “If you were not to exist, I would not have created heavens and the earth including all creatures. I created all of them for you. (Marifatnama, p. 566; Mir’at-e Kainat, Vol. 1, p. 414; Irshad, Vol. 1, p. 127)
“I have not sent you but as a mercy to the worlds.” (Anbiya, 107) There are many ayats and hadiths praising. Praising him results in benefits for the religion, the faith, good deeds, belief, mind, and reason.
Songs result in benefits for the nafs and lust which is forbidden by Allah Almighty. What can we say to the one who gives a sermon to a big congregation, yet cannot separate mawlid from song?
O Muslims! I ask you: Is Allah’s praising of our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, in the Qur’an and ayats like a song? If those ayats are true and we praise him as he is praised in the ayats, is this like a song? Fear Allah and shame on you! Do not go to astray at the expense of insisting on your claim! The mawlid is based on the Qur’an. What are you based on? If Allah Almighty praises him so much, we should praise him too. Who else is better than him to be praised? Enjoining good and forbidding bad is something that Allah has praised and what He dislikes. If you prevent people from praising he who Allah has praised, are you against enjoining good and forbidding bad? We praise him since Allah has praised him. How can praising him be equal to praising someone else or the one Allah has disliked? It is sad to downgrade the praise of the mawlid. You are wrong. You implicitly say tp Allah: “No matter that You have praise Your prophet; I can prevent this and you are free to do whatever you want.” Allah Almighty is the one who loves and praises our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, much more than anyone else. Shaitan is the one who dislikes our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, much more than anyone else. To whom do those who are opposed to the mawlid direct their anger and hatred? To the praising of Allah or to our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam? Allah Almighty looks at the hearts of His servants. (Tam Ilmihal, p. 20) The servant looks at the appearances. The hypocrites tried to prevent the Prophet being praised. While preventing him being praised, whom are you serving?
My father Bilal says:
“The Miraj of our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, was expressed briefly in the mawlid. If it were to be expressed as our Prophet stated it would be too long.”
This subject can be seen in some books as follows:
1- The writer of Alti Parmak said that he shortened this subject. It is ninety pages in Ottoman Turkish.
2- Mawahib Ladunniyya shortened it even more. Sixty pages.
3- Mir’at-e Kainat shortened it even more. Thirty-seven pages.
4- The original mawlid of Suleyman Chalabi is five times longer than today’s version.
5- Today’s version of the mawlid includes seven pages.
6- Today, they shorten the mawlid even more to finish it as soon as possible. Whereas, we should recite all of it, including the poems that praise our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. Wassalam.

“There are three voices of which Allah Almighty is proud before His angels: Adhan, Taqbir in the way of Allah and the loudest voice in talbiya.” (Ramuz al-Ahadith, Hadith no: 3317)
***
“Angels are ready in every assembly where the dhikr of Allah is performed. They say: “Perform dhikr of Allah more and more so that Allah increases His goodness upon you.” When they ascend to the heavens, the dhikr of Allah rises along with them.” (Ramuz al-Ahadith, Hadith no: 4247)
***
Rising is different from ascending. Ascending is up to a level, yet rising has no limits.
One recites the mawlid, however he does not perform dhikr of Allah. At the beginning of the mawlid it is stated:
First, let us utter the name of Allah
For example;
Always utter the word of Allah in every breath
You know this. Why do you not perform the dhikr of Allah while reciting the mawlid or at other times?
Worse, one says that mawlid is bid’ah and that it should not be recited. If you ask him to show you where the bid’ah elements are in the mawlid, he cannot do so. Did not the companions recite poems regarding the Prophet’s birth, life, good manners and miraj and tell them to each other? They always praised him in their lives. On the contrary, infidel poets recited poems that disparaged him. Which side are you on? Tell us which side!
The poets of our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, Hassan, Kab Ibn Malik from Ansar, Abdullah Ibn Rawaha (Sahih Bukhari, Tajrid-e Sareeh, Vol. 9, p. 26) and Kathir Ibn Amr, all praised our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, during their life times.
If you have a son and he does a good job, you are proud of him. The companions were proud of our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, and his miraj. If they praised him, then was this not also bid’ah? We perform every sunnah as much as we can. Moreover, we have to spread every kind of sunnah all over the world. Those who did not see our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, perform his sunnah by hearing about it and learning about it. I, personally, cannot see anything bid’ah in the mawlid.
A bid’ah action is a deed which our Prophet did not perform or adopt. During mawlid ceremonies, the Qur’an is recited; it is compulsory to listen to the Qur’an, and salawat is invoked upon our Prophet. He is praised since Allah has praised him. We cannot praise him as he was praised by Allah, so we are insufficient. The mawlid mentions the miraj, the Prophet’s conversation with Allah and the people of Paradise and his leading the prophets. Those who call the mawlid bid’ah are stuck in bid’ah, yet they do not know it. Are not the minaret, electricity, the concrete mosque, speakers, printing, printed books, audio-cassettes, the clothes we wear all bid’ah? They are all of a good type of bid’ah, which we do not reject. What we reject is bad bid’ah. By Allah, I am asking: Is it bid’ah to praise our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam? Is it bid’ah to mention that Allah spoke to him with ninety thousand words? Remove your cross-eyed glasses and see the truth! Most of our scholars cannot see the difference between good bid’ah and bad bid’ah. Do their manners all conform with sunnah? The mawlid instills the love of Allah and His Prophet. Its beginning is the Qur’an and its end is salawat and praise of our Prophet. If you make it stop and thus people do not love Allah and His Prophet, how can you expect them to love you? Indeed, you have shot yourself in the foot by stopping the mawlid from being be recited.
My father Bilal said:
“It is told that the mawlid was written by Suleyman Chalabi and there was no mawlid before his time. It is not true. The mawlid has been recited since the time of Abu Bakr. According to the book “Bil Masail” by Imam Jalaladdin as-Suyuti, it is determined that the mawlid has been recited beginning from time of Hazrat AbBakr.
Also, Imam Allama Shihabuddin Ahmad Ibn Hajar al-Haitami as-Shafi – rahmatullahi alaihi- wrote in his book “An-nimatil Qubra Alal Alam fi mawlid sayyidi waladi adam” that the mawlid has been recited since the time of the four caliphates. When Turks became Muslims, they translated Arabic books into Turkish. The Mawlid-e Sharif was first translated by Suleyman Chalabi. He also developed it. One should think about the fact that the companions preserved the heritage of our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, including his ablution with water, the shoes he wore, the letters he wrote, the steps he took, how he wore his hair. He is the beloved. He is the Master of the Heavens and the Earth. He is the Last of the Prophets. Everything was created in honor of him. If one tries to count his qualities, they cannot. The companions were the greatest of humans. They love our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, more than anything else. They recite mawlid better than us since they value our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. They sacrificed their lives for the sake of Allah and the Prophet.
It was a great blessing for the companions to host our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. When our Prophet visited them, their houses were full of blessings and their problems were solved. Therefore, they were keen to invite him to their houses. When Uthman, radhiallahu anh, invited him to his house, he looked at his feet. Someone asked why he did this. He said:
“I am counting his steps. I will sacrifice as many animals as he takes steps.” And he did so. (In another narration he said: “I will free as many slaves much as he takes steps.) (Dort Buyuk Halife Kitabi (Shamsuddin Ahmad Effendi), Story 12, p. 187) We have already written how Jabir invited our Prophet in our book. (Mir’at-e Kainat, Vol. 1, p. 497; Shawahid an Nubuwwa, p. 114; Narrated by Mawahib Ladunniya, too) If we were to live at that time, we would invite him in the same way, yet we do not live in his time.
Now, if we invite the poor and the needy, offer meals to them, have the Qur’an and mawlid recited, if we pray for him and invoke salawat upon him and if we eat, then we are invite him as did by the companions. If we invite A in the name of B just because we love B, we are deemed to have invited B. May Allah accept it as we expect. He will do inshallah. (Amen)
“Let you spend (benevolently) out of what We have given them.” (Hajj, 34-35)
Today, the mawlid provides this service. Invoking salawat upon him in congregation is the greatest sawab, which is only performed in mawlid.
“Allah Almighty does not accept the deeds of people of bid’ah including their salat, fasting, pilgrimage, zakat, umra, hajj, and spending; and they are out of Islam.” (Ramuz-al Ahadith, Hadith no: 6093, 1267; Tam Ilmihal, p. 19)
The dihkr in the mawlid is compulsory. Salawat is wajib and praising the Prophet is compulsory since Allah has praised him in the Qur’an. Eventually, rejection of the mawlid is worse than abandoning the Sunnah.

“And on the day when We will raise up in every people a witness against them from among themselves, and bring you as a witness against these-- and We have revealed the Book to you explaining clearly everything, and a guidance and mercy and good news for those who submit.” (Nahl, 89; Nisa, 41)
***
One hundred twenty four thousand prophets will be witness before the state of Allah. All the companions, madhab imams, sheiks and pirs will be ready and Allah will judge. (Tin, 8) Everything, all accounts, testimonies, deeds, words will come out. Muhammad, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, the most beloved and the greatest prophet of Allah, is the primary witness before the state of Allah. While all the prophets and the friends of Allah are there, Allah will ask, showing his beloved prophet:
“Millions of Muslims were eagerly reciting mawlid to implant his love. I praised him in the ayats. Why did you ban it? He is my primary witness. So are they. Why did you oppose praising him?”
He will ask those questions most certainly. No one is allowed to talk before His presence. One is asked a question. If he answers it, they are rescued. If not, they are cast into the hellfire.
Allah Almighty said in the Qur’an:
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Last of the prophets; and Allah is cognizant of all things.” (Ahzab, 40)
Will He not ask: Why did you not believe in this ayat? If you believed in it, why did you oppose it?” May Allah awaken you! (Amen)
Dear reader! Read our salawat section and never oppose the salawat that is recited during the mawlid and the musafaha in the mosques!

“I asked Anas, radhiallahu anh:
‘Was there musafaha among the companions of the Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam?’ He answered me:
‘Yes.’ (Sihah Sita, Vol. 10, Hadith no: 3390; Sunan Dhirmidhi, Vol. 4, Hadith no: 2873 similar version)

8- Narrated by Anas, radhiallahu anh: A man asked the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam:
“When a man among us meets his brother or his friend, should he bow to him?” The Prophet, sallallahu alaihi was sallam, said:
‘No.’ The man asked:
‘Should he embrace and kiss him?’ The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, replied:
‘No.’ He asked:
‘Should he hold his hand and shake it?’ The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, replied:

9- “For a believer, kissing the hand of his brother in Islam is musafaha.” Thus, kissing hands is sunnah according to the hadith: “Make musafaha.” (Kanz-al Irfan, Hadith no: 932)

A believer can shake his brother’s hand, but he cannot kiss or sniff him.
According to this hadith, kissing hands is allowable since it is deemed to be musafaha. If two people are of the same status, the same age and the same knowledge, they can shake hands with one another.
If one is older or a scholar, the other might kiss his hand due to his age or knowledge. In a hadith is stated:
“Respecting the old is like respecting Noah, alaihissalam.” (Ramuz-al-Hadith, Hadith no: 5061)
Regarding knowledge, it is an attribute of Allah. It is within the determined attributes of Allah. Knowledge is from Allah. So, the hand of a scholar might be kissed because of respect for his knowledge. That is what this hadith states.

10- Abu Umame, radhiallahu anh, reported that the Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, said:

14- “If any Muslim shakes another Muslim’s hand and they do not have any grudge against each other, Allah forgives all their past sins when they part. ***
15- “Musafaha is the most important trait of a Muslim.” (Ramuz-al-Hadith, Hadith no: 4121)
***
O, those who refute musafaha and speak against it! Fear Allah! There are many hadiths about musafaha. If it is not good, then show us evidence of it!
Musafaha is not practiced, yet there are a number of hadiths stating that it should be practiced. Eventually, this neglect will harm Muslims spiritually. The reason for this is our scholars. They should encourage people to make musafaha, to practice it in public and have people kiss their hands, yet they do not do this. Musafaha is very important and highly rewarded. People should be advised to make musafaha, yet, scholars claim that mushafa cannot be performed in mosques. They do not even perform it outside of the mosque.
Fear of Allah’s wrath is sufficient. Allah Almighty said in the Qur’an:
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Last of the prophets; and Allah is cognizant of all things.” (Ahzab, 40)
Praising someone whom Allah praises is obligatory. We have to promote his musafaha and salawat.
“Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who believe! call for (Divine) blessings on him and salute him with a (becoming) salutation.” (Ahzab, 56)
Eighteen thousands worlds, including our earth, the Ka’ba, mosques, in fact everything is created because of the light of Allah’s Messenger, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. If you ban musafaha and the mawlid of the Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, in this mosque, what will be your destiny?
“We have not sent you but as a mercy to the worlds.” (Anbiya, 107)
Allah talked to all the prophets through inspiration or via an angel. He talked to Musa, alaihissalam, on Mount Sana with words. (Mir’at-e Kainat, Vol. 1, p. 203) He talked to other prophets and awliya in this way, but He ascended our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, to His state to talk. Our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, both saw and talked to Allah Almighty. (Mir’at-e Kainat, Vol. 1, p. 432) This blessing, both seeing and talking, was only granted to our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. Allah Almighty so loved the Prophet that He accepted all his wishes.

16- “Allah chose Ibrahim as His friend and Musa to talk to him secretly. I was chosen as the Beloved. Then He said:
‘By My majesty and My bounty, I prefer My Beloved to be secret from both to My Friend and the one to whom I talked.’” (Ramuz-al-Hadith, Hadith Qudsi no: 97)

18- “How will it be, then, when We bring from every people a witness and bring you as a witness against these?” (Nisa, 41; Nahl, 89)
Soon Allah will be the master in the place of the Hereafter. All the prophets will be witnesses. Everyone will be brought to this court. If you ban the name of the beloved prophet whom Allah praised in the Qur’an in Allah’s house, will He not ask: “Why did you ban his name and his salawat?” How can you ban His Beloved’s name in His house? If you ban it, how can you expect him to be a witness for you? Think about your situation!
If Our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, asks:
- Why did you ban my name? Did you not notice that only hypocrites did not like and praise me and that they tried to refute my words? Did you not know that? Did you not realize that you would be of them since you talked the way they talked?
What will be your reply?
The ayat below is regarding hypocrites:
“Wavering between that (and this), (belonging) neither to these nor to those; and whomsoever Allah causes to err, you shall not find a way for him.” (Nisa 143)
If you truly believe in the Prophet, know that Allah has praised him in the Qur’an. Praising someone Allah has praised is compulsory. So there is no harm in performing mawlid, musafaha, or salawat. Why do you not perform them?
You recite the Qur’an by lengthening and lowering your voice or by employing a high-pitched voice. In this Qur’an, Allah praises Muhammad, Rasulullah as the seal of the prophets. (Ahzab, 40) Banning his name, musafaha, mawlid in mosques is banning the Qur’an, is it not? If you go further, you will target the Qur’an, do you not understand? You care about every word of the Qur’an so that you can chant them perfectly, yet you seem not to hear all the praises that are there for our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. How can you expect that your reciting will be accepted?
Allah Almighty is the one who most loves our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi was sallam. Iblis is the one who most hates him. If you praise him and advice his salawat, musafaha and mawlid, who would be most pleased? Allah will be most pleased. If Iblis is the one who most hates our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, Iblis will be pleased with your decision to ban his name. If you please Iblis and offend Allah Almighty, does this not say to Allah that you want to be with those who you please?

19- “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are firm of heart against the unbelievers and compassionate among themselves; you will see them bowing down, prostrating themselves, seeking grace from Allah and pleasure; the marks are on their faces because of prostration; that is their description in the Taurat and their description in the Injeel; (cont.)” (Fath, 29)
This ayat was revealed about our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, and the four caliphs.
Those who are with him: Abu Bakr,
Firm of heart against the unbelievers: Umar,
Compassionate among themselves, you will see them bowing down, prostrating themselves, seeking grace from Allah and pleasure: Uthman,
Their marks are on their faces because of prostration: Ali.
Our Prophet was so praised in the Qur’an, in Taurat and the Injeel. Do those who claim that the musafaha of the Prophet, sallallahu alaih wa sallam, is a bid’a (innovation in religion) also claim that these ayats are bid’a and ban them to be recited in mosques? If they allow them to be recited, what will they do with their meanings? If their meanings will be banned in mosques, what will be offered in place of their meanings? Do they omit these ayats from the Qur’an just because they think musafaha and mawlid are bid’a? Reciting this ayat and then not allowing musafaha is banning this ayat, is not it? The hodja called it bid’a, so let us ask him:
Are not the construction materials of the mosque, its dome, minaret, electricity, microphone, AC, carpet, are not all these bid’a? Is there any ayat descended regarding them as descended regarding our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam? You ban the one descended ayat regarding this and you call it bid’a, then you allow actual bid’a? If you build a mosque according to sunnah, you have to use adobe bricks and date palm leaves. Are your all manners, hair, clothing, houses and commodities appropriate to the sunnah? It is said that no one can interfere between Allah and His servant. You interfere between Allah and His Messenger. As the ayat says, obey Allah’s Messenger. We do not mean that our mosques are not constructed according to sunnah. They are all permissible. However, while the hodja stress the importance of bid’a, he does not say that it is a must to praise our Prophet and perform his mawlid and salawat although there are numerous ayats. While there are ayats in which Allah praises and loves him, they call it bid’a. Is there any ayat regarding the true bid’as mentioned below as certain as the ayats regarding the Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam? You call those things you do not like bid’a. You hide those things that you disagree with. You will see true bid’a and true sunnah on the Day of Judgment.
Let us not err in resemblance: Allah Almighty is the President. Our Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, is the prime minister. We are the servants. Servants are assigned to interfere with their words, doings, houses, and musafaha. If He wishes, He can fire the servant or He can punish him. You will be cast into hell fire if you slander His doings, mosque and musafaha of His Beloved since you transgress divine commands. May Allah protect you! (Amen)
